Due to popular request, once again I am setting out, explaining, and demonstrating some inking techniques and styles. Below is a sample image; a fake pencil sketch done on my Wacom tablet of my usual demonstration character, "Count Tumansky." The pencils are admittedly loose, but it is often the job of an inker to make something like this presentable for publication.

How does an inker make pencil sketches presentable for publication? First, apply ink in a neat, tidy manner. Follow the pencil lines, but also remember you may often have to interpret them. Err on the side of neatness and being, as the animators say, "on model."

The second main thing the inker does is add contrast to the image (so as to lead the eye around the page), and tighten up the composition, as well as any loose pencils. An inker is not a tracer, as often they have to interpret and add where the pencils give nothing. Here is our test image.
