When I put out my first album, I want it to be panned by every reviewer in the business, and I don't just mean them saying it's uninteresting or uninspired or not very good... I want them to feel hate, virulent hate, for me and my music. "If you buy it you're an idiot," "It's un-American," "it's the worst piece of trash to ever come out of the music industry," "burn it immediately," etc. I want them to be personally offended by its very existence. Well, that's a challenge. What we're really talking about is making an album so good that they just can't handle it, that violates the laws of musical physics and must be rat-awful because it pulls them in but isn't anything a "good" album should be. That's about the time that they realize that their standards are outdated, and that never makes anyone comfortable.
They say that when you're writing an epic, you should murder your darlings, and I want to murder you all, my darlings.
