Another method of adding contrast and visual interest is hatching, a technique I'm not very good at. It works best for those with a slow, steady hand, and a lot of patience. Some shortcuts can be taken, such as using a "forked" brush, but generally a neat hand and a small brush or crow quill pen will give best results. This style of toning is not recommended for the beginner, as the results are either horribly sloppy or stilted in a neat but lifeless manner.

A combination of spotted blacks and hatching is sometimes seen in Italian comics. I dislike it, as the effect is often heavy or overworked. However, I include it for completeness.
